The Charles Manning Award

The Charles Manning Award provides grants to healthcare professionals who work in the area of scoliosis. The grant as a contribution towards travel costs incurred when visiting relevant institutions. Contributions towards the cost of attending conferences or meetings directly related to your field of expertise may be considered in some circumstances.

The award is intended for applicants of a pre-consultant level and allied health professionals. However, in exceptional circumstances an award may be made to an individual who does not fit these criteria. SAUK particularly welcomes applications from junior doctors.

Who was Charles Manning?

Charles Manning was an Orthopaedic Surgeon who spearheaded the development of scoliosis surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital during the 1960s and early 1970s. 

During his career, he collaborated with Dr Philip Zorab at the Brompton Hospital to develop respiratory research in scoliosis and developed an international reputation in the field of Early onset scoliosis. 

Mr Manning was instrumental in promoting research findings and best practice between medical professionals, which remains a key priority for SSR to the present day. The Charles Manning Award aims to help ensure that the discovery and sharing of modern, up-to-date research is supported and encouraged.
