We’re excited to launch our new ABCD of Scoliosis awareness campaign this June to help people recognise the early signs of scoliosis. Early detection can change lives, and this campaign is designed to empower families, schools, and communities with simple tools to spot scoliosis early.

My condition was diagnosed in 1966 when I was 10 years old – curvature of the spine with rotation. At that time, the only available treatments were bone grafts or a torso plaster cast, with no guarantees of success.
I finally received my official diagnosis aged 50 and have since been told I have adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Throughout my adult life I suffered from debilitating back pain without knowing why.
Overall, I think my experience has made me brave and resilient. It was hard at the time, but I don’t think about it very much at all anymore. I am lucky to feel normal and have such a good support system around me.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 11 but it was left untreated for years as my referral to the hospital got lost, so I had to live with a deteriorating spine.
Ten years ago, I faced a pivotal moment that has shaped my life – 11 hour major spinal surgery to correct scoliosis. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this huge milestone by officially being able to say, I will be running the London Marathon 2024 for Scoliosis Support and Research.
