Written by Wayne Ingram
In July 2025, my memoir Soldier of Conscience was published across the UK, North America, and Europe. From the outset, I made one thing clear: every penny of royalty would be donated to Scoliosis Support and Research (SSR)—a cause that changed our family’s life forever.
In June 2019, our daughter was diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis. By December, she underwent major surgery to have two titanium rods inserted into her spine. Watching her recover in those first few days was heartbreaking—but it lit a fire in me. I vowed to do everything I could to help prevent other families from facing the same ordeal.
My first fundraising event was called Let’s Reverse This Together—a symbolic 76-mile walk, backwards, retracing the journey from diagnosis to surgery. Every step was a promise to fight for change.
Now, with the release of Soldier of Conscience, I’m continuing that mission. This book isn’t just my story—it’s a lifeline for others.
What’s Inside
The heart of the memoir recounts a 13-year journey to raise over £160,000 to save the life of Stefan Savić, a Bosnian boy born with a severe facial deformity. I met Stefan while serving in his country as a soldier. Over the years, we raised enough to bring him to the UK for five life-changing operations.
Surrounding this story are chapters from my life as:
• A soldier at war
• A motorcycle paramedic and firefighter in the UK
• A close protection paramedic in Iraq
• An aeromedical paramedic in Africa
• A prisoner in an African jail
• A fundraiser for orphanages and children’s hospitals
• A survivor of seven days and nights on a life raft in the English Channel
The final chapter—perhaps the hardest to write—shares my battle with Complex PTSD, born from witnessing the horrors of war and trauma. It’s raw, honest, and written to help others feel less alone.
Why It Matters
The response has been overwhelming. The first print sold out, prompting a reprint. Every day, I receive messages from strangers thanking me for helping them confront their own mental health struggles.
By buying Soldier of Conscience, you’re not just reading a story—you’re supporting scoliosis research, mental health awareness, and real change.
